Notes of Interest
● This weekend, Bonanza Wines returns as a primary sponsor of Cole Custer’s No. 41 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 for the second of its three primary races on the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series calendar. The season’s first for the Napa-based winery came at COTA in March.
● 2026 marks Caymus Vineyards’ 13th year of involvement in motorsports, with partnerships spanning the NASCAR Cup Series, where the winery is in its fourth year with the Haas Factory Team organization, and the NTT INDYCAR Series, where 2026 Indianapolis 500 winner Felix Rosenqvist and Pietro Fittipaldi carried the Caymus Vineyards and Bonanza Wines branding. Caymus Vineyards was also a key partner in the universally loved SRX Series, which was co-owned by NASCAR legend Tony Stewart, and, in 2022, partnered with drivers Casey Mears and Oriol Servia as part of the Mexico City Formula 1 event. Fittipaldi also collaborated with Caymus Vineyards at the 2023 Rolex 24 at Daytona, partnering one of racing’s most famous families with one of the sport’s marquee events.
● The NASCAR Cup Series visits World Wide Technology Raceway for just the fifth time. It also marks the second time that the track has hosted a NASCAR Cup Series Chase race. The first NASCAR national series race at WWT Raceway was a NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race on June 26, 1997, and was won by Elliott Sadler.
● WWT Raceway is famous for its asymmetric layout. Turns 1 and 2 are sharper and more heavily banked, demanding precision braking and handling, while Turns 3 and 4 are wider and flatter, encouraging higher exit speeds and side‑by‑side racing. This unique combination makes the track a favorite among drivers and a thrill for spectators, as strategy and skill often determine the winner.
● Notable historical events at World Wide Technology Raceway include Evel Knievel’s motorcycle jumps over 10 cars in 1972.
● Originally named St. Louis International Raceway, the legendary venue was built in 1967 as a drag racing facility before a road course was added in 1985. The facility was renamed Gateway International Raceway in 1988. In 1994, the existing drag strip and road course were demolished and a new oval speedway and drag strip were constructed.
By the Numbers
● Custer will be making his second NASCAR Cup Series start at WWT Raceway. He has completed 100% of the laps and has also led three times at the historic facility that rests in the shadow of the St. Louis Arch.
● Notably, in August 2025 at Daytona International Speedway, Custer finished fourth by only a foot in the No. 41 Bonanza Cabernet car after leading seven laps (third most among the field).
● In his 26 NASCAR Cup Series starts this season, Custer has completed 6,762 of a possible 7,114 laps, resulting in an impressive 95.1% lap completion percentage.
● NASCAR Cup Series teams will run the same Goodyear Racing Eagles at World Wide Technology Raceway this weekend that they used in last year’s race at the St. Louis-area track. This is the first time Cup Series teams will use this left- and right-side tire combination this season, however the right-side Goodyear Racing Eagle was raced at Iowa Speedway last month. Each team receives 12 sets of tires for the race weekend (nine new race sets, one qualifying set transferred to the race and two sets for practice).
