Notes of Interest
● NASCAR heads to EchoPark Speedway this weekend for the superspeedway’s second and final race date of the season.
● Sunday’s Quaker State 400 will mark the NASCAR Cup Series’ fourth superspeedway-style race of the season. Among the series’ full-time competitors, only five drivers have achieved a single-digit average finish on the configuration thus far this season.
● Atlanta’s inaugural NASCAR Cup Series race took place on July 31, 1960, with Fireball Roberts collecting the win.
● When the 1.5-mile track, then called Atlanta International Raceway, finally made its debut on July 31, 1960, it became the seventh superspeedway, a paved facility of one mile or more, to play host to a Cup race. Only four of the original seven – Darlington Raceway, Daytona International Speedway, Charlotte Motor Speedway, and Atlanta – are still in operation.
By the Numbers
● Custer will make his 10th Cup Series start at Atlanta this weekend, where he owns a 22.9 average finish. His best result is a ninth-place finish in July 2022, his lone top-10 at the track.
● He started seventh in last season’s fall race and carries a 21.9 average starting position at Atlanta.
● In seven O’Reilly Series starts at Atlanta, Custer has recorded three top-10 finishes and won the pole in 2019.
● The NASCAR Cup Series will run the same Goodyear Racing Eagle tire setup in this weekend’s race at EchoPark Speedway as was used in the Atlanta venue’s spring race. This tire setup is unique to EchoPark Speedway and features a right-side tire that was introduced for February’s race on the 1.54-mile drafting oval. Each team will receive nine sets for the race (eight race sets plus one set transferred from qualifying)
