Notes of Interest

● A week ago, at Texas Motor Speedway, a group of Texas A&M University engineering and marketing students participated in an immersive, behind-the-scenes NASCAR experience with Haas Factory Team. The students spent the day interfacing with team engineers, crew members and the drivers. They later appeared on the starting grid and in Haas’s pit stall for the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race. Of note, eight students will receive internships at Haas’s Kannapolis, N.C.-based race shop this summer.

● NASCAR heads to New York this weekend, as Watkins Glen’s 2.45-mile road course plays host to all four of the sport’s national touring series’.

● Watkins Glen International is the spiritual home of road course racing in America, with crowds flocking to the famed venue to see top-level racing since the 1940s. In 1948, the first post-World War II road race in the United States took place at The Glen.

● The iconic 1971 film, “The French Connection,” features a high-speed chase scene through the streets of Watkins Glen.

● Each team gets six sets of Goodyear Racing Eagle tires for the race (five new race sets plus one set transferred from qualifying). Teams will also receive five sets of wet-weather tires (four new race sets plus one set transferred from qualifying).

By the Numbers

● Cole Custer makes his fifth Cup Series start at Watkins Glen International this weekend, where he owns a 22.8 average finish. His best result at the track came in 2022 when he finished 11th and led seven laps.

● This weekend marks Custer’s 23rd NASCAR Cup Series Road course start overall. His best finish in Cup Road course competition is eighth, earned in Mexico City last season.

● Custer has two career NASCAR O’Reilly Series Road course wins, coming at Portland International Raceway (2023) and the Chicago Street Race (2023).
