Notes of Interest

● Texas Motor Speedway hosts its lone race date of the season this weekend as the NASCAR Cup Series heads to the Lone Star State.

● For the second consecutive year, a group of Texas A&M University engineering and marketing students will participate in an immersive, behind-the-scenes NASCAR experience with Haas Factory Team at Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday. The students will spend the day interfacing with team engineers, crew members and the drivers. They will be on pit road for NASCAR Cup Series qualifying and later appear on the starting grid and in Haas’s pit stall for the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race. Of note, eight students will receive internships at Haas’s Kannapolis, N.C.-based race shop this summer.

● Much like Charlotte Motor Speedway, Indianapolis Motor Speedway and other big tracks, there is a road course on the infield of Texas Motor Speedway. There are four different variations of the infield course with between eight and 15 turns depending on the layout.

● A high-speed 1.5-mile quad-oval, the 2001 Firestone Firehawk 600 IndyCar race was canceled after most of the drivers complained of dizziness after practice runs. Tests showed the drivers were bearing G-loads of 5.5 (five times the force of gravity); drivers usually don’t get above the 3’s.

● Often referred to as the fastest track in NASCAR, Jeff Burton won the inaugural Cup Series race on April 6, 1997, out-hustling Dale Jarrett, Bobby Labonte, Terry Labonte, and Ricky Rudd to the checkered flag.

● Each team gets nine sets of Goodyear Racing Eagle tires for the race (eight new race sets plus one set transferred from qualifying).

By the Numbers

● Custer will make his sixth Cup Series start at Texas Motor Speedway this weekend, where he holds a 25.2 average finish. His best result at the track came in the fall of 2020 with a 14th-place finish.

● Custer has started inside the top 20 four times at Texas, including a career-best starting position of 16th in the fall of 2020. Overall, he owns a 19.8 average starting position at the track.

● In addition, Custer has made eight NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series starts at Texas, earning seven top-10 finishes, five top-five finishes, and a victory in 2018.
