● NASCAR goes short-track racing for the first time this season as Martinsville Speedway hosts its first of two race dates this weekend.
● Referred to as ‘The Paperclip’, Martinsville Speedway is the only track on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule to have hosted a race in every season dating back to 1949.
● Rather than a trophy, NASCAR race winners at historic Martinsville Speedway receive a grandfather clock for their effort. It’s the most unique trophy in the sport and one that keeps on giving — it chimes every 15 minutes, reminding all within earshot of
a celebrated win.
● Red Byron won the inaugural NASCAR race at Martinsville Speedway on September 25, 1949.
● Each team gets nine sets of Goodyear Racing Eagle tires for the race (eight new race sets plus one set transferred from qualifying).
By the Numbers
● Cole Custer makes his ninth Cup start at Martinsville this weekend, where he has a 21.0 average finish.
● The Ladera Ranch, Calif., native has started inside the top six in three of his last four starts at Martinsville, firing off P3 and P5, respectively, in 2022 and P6 in October 2025.
