Notes of Interest

● For the first time ever, NASCAR will race in San Diego with a street course event at Naval Base Coronado. The 3.4-mile temporary circuit features 16 turns and is located on Naval Air Station North Island as part of the United States Navy’s 250th anniversary celebration.

● Texas A&M University and Haas Factory Team will honor former President George H.W. Bush’s legacy with a tribute car driven by Cole Custer during the Anduril 250 NASCAR Cup Series race this weekend. It is a fitting stage to honor the 41st president on the No. 41 car and celebrate a life of service that began as one of the Navy’s youngest aviators during World War II and continued through decades of leadership in public service.

● The special livery will honor Bush’s legacy while highlighting values that define both him and the university he chose as the home of his presidential library, school of public service, and final resting place: character, courage, leadership, and selfless service.

● Although President Bush was not a Texas A&M graduate, his connection to the university became one of the defining relationships of his later life. He visited often, admired the Corps of Cadets and spoke frequently about Texas A&M’s commitment to service.

● President Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush ultimately chose Texas A&M’s campus as the final resting place for themselves and their daughter, Pauline “Robin” Bush.

By the Numbers

● Custer has made one career NASCAR Cup Series start on a street course, finishing 33rd last season at the Chicago Street Course after an early-race incident. He does, however, hold two career NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series Road Course wins, coming at Portland (2023) and the Chicago Street Race (2023).

● Custer has qualified in the top-20 four of the last five weeks and has three top-16 finishes in the same timespan.

● The Goodyear Racing Eagle road course tire run by NASCAR Cup Series teams this weekend has been used at Circuit of The Americas (COTA) and Watkins Glen International this year, and at all six road and street course races last season. Teams will receive 9 sets of tires for the race weekend (5 new race sets / 1 qualifying set transferred to the race / 3 practice sets).
